3 Non-Surgical Options For Spinal Compression

Health & Medical Blog

Spinal compression can cause a number of symptoms, including pain, numbness, and incontinence. As a result, seeking treatment is necessary. Although there are surgical options available for treating the condition, your doctor will most likely recommend non-surgical options first. If you are suffering from spinal compression, here are some of the non-surgical options your doctor could recommend.

Pain Medication

Depending on the severity of the pain you are experiencing, your doctor could recommend using over-the-counter pain medication to alleviate your symptoms. Pain medications, such as aspirin, can also be useful in helping to reduce inflammation, which can occur with spinal compression.

If the over-the-counter options do not help, a prescription pain reliever can be used. The stronger medication is usually reserved for moderate to severe pain.

Physical Therapy

At some point, your doctor could recommend seeing a physical therapist. There are several benefits to physical therapy, but the most important is that it can help to return mobility and flexibility to your back. Spinal compression can sometimes leave you with mobility and flexibility problems.

During physical therapy, you will not only perform a number of exercises during sessions, but also be given exercises to complete at home. If you decide to do any exercises outside of the recommended ones, talk to your therapist first to avoid re-injuring yourself.

Spinal Decompression

Spinal compression places a significant amount of pressure on your spine, which accounts for the pain you are feeling. Spinal decompression focuses on alleviating the pressure so that you can start to heal.

Spinal decompression works by using traction to strengthen your spine. During a therapy session, a harness is placed around the pelvis while you lie on a table. The harness serves as a force that helps to change the position of your spine so that the pressure on it is relieved. Your spine will be stretched and you should start to feel relief.

Not everyone is qualified to undergo spinal decompression. If you are pregnant, have had multiple surgeries on your back, or have an artificial disc, you most likely will not be offered the treatment. Your doctor will recommend an alternative treatment.

Spinal compression can impact your everyday life. If left untreated, the condition could worsen to the point that you will not be able to perform your daily routine. If non-surgical options are not available to you, your doctor will recommend an alternative surgical option that is right for you. For more information, check out a site like http://swfna.com.

introducing your daughter to the gynecologist

Having a daughter comes with a number of challenges. One challenge that you will one day need to tackle is determining when to introduce your daughter to the gynecologist. Do you take your daughter to the same gynecologist that you see or take her somewhere else? Do you wait until she gets her first period or do you take her in to learn about the menstrual cycle from the doctor? There is a long list of questions you likely have about introducing your daughter to the world of gynecology. Having gone through this twice myself, I have learned quite a bit and have included a lot of helpful information in my site to help other parents get through this complicated time a little easier.
