3 Characteristics Of A Good Physical Therapist

Blog

Finding a good physical therapist is an essential part of your healing process. If you have recently had surgery, or been in an accident, you should be starting a physical therapy program under the direction of your doctor. It might seem daunting to find a physical therapist that meets your needs. To help you with that decision, here are 3 signs of a good physical therapist.

1. Pushes You, But Doesn't Hurt You

Some people mistakenly think that a sign of a good physical therapist is someone who pushes you so hard that it hurts you. There is the age-old saying "no pain, no gain" that many people accept to be doctrine. However, that is not necessarily the case. Physical therapy is meant to challenge you, but it is also meant to help you, not hurt you. If you leave your physical therapy appointments feeling weaker and in more pain, than you are not getting good treatment. You should feel stronger and challenged, but never miserable.

If you are in constant pain during your appointments, you should consider going somewhere else. Pain is not the goal of physical therapy.

2. Is A Good Communicator

Physical therapy is physically challenging, but it can also be emotionally taxing. There will be times when you might feel discouraged, frustrated or unhappy about your circumstances. A good physical therapist will be able to talk with you about those feelings and help you feel encouraged. Your relationship with the therapist should be comfortable. You should be able to talk to them about things that are in important to you, and consult with them about your needs. This doesn't mean that the therapist needs to be a mental health counselor as well, but it does mean that you should be able to have open and comfortable conversations with them about your treatment and any concerns that you might have.

3. Is Able To See Your Often

Physical therapy is most effective when it is frequent. You should be able to get appointments as often as needed. If you have to wait for long periods of time to get an appointment with the therapist because they are booked too far out, or they are not available to you when you need them, it might be time to find a new therapist. Even if you love your therapist, you will not heal like you should if you cannot get the appointments when you need them.

If you can find a therapist who meets all of these qualities you know you have found the right one.

introducing your daughter to the gynecologist

Having a daughter comes with a number of challenges. One challenge that you will one day need to tackle is determining when to introduce your daughter to the gynecologist. Do you take your daughter to the same gynecologist that you see or take her somewhere else? Do you wait until she gets her first period or do you take her in to learn about the menstrual cycle from the doctor? There is a long list of questions you likely have about introducing your daughter to the world of gynecology. Having gone through this twice myself, I have learned quite a bit and have included a lot of helpful information in my site to help other parents get through this complicated time a little easier.
